When we first moved into our trailer house, I told myself it was just a “for now” thing. You know, temporary. But the longer we’ve been here, the more I’ve realized that we won't get a new forever home and this is it so why wait to love the space we're in? So lately, I’ve been slowly (and I mean slowly) turning this little trailer into a home that actually feels like us.
Starting Small is the plan
The first space I am tackling isn't the kitchen or the living room. It's the closet, but not just any closet. It's the spare room (currently my Library/Office) closet.
It might sound funny, but I wanted to start small to work out the kinks of the process on a space no one will see. Somewhere manageable, where I could make mistakes and actually finish something. I pulled everything out from the basic wire shelving, random nails and screws and those wall strips that come standard in most trailer houses. Next will be patching, filling, sanding, priming and painting.
Once I finish the basics I want to build custom closet shelves and clothes bar, etc. I plan to make it bright but moody and have fun with color. Nice trim to make a big difference! I want it to fell less “trailer” and more homey.
My love for thrift shopping and upcycling has found a place of use that won't cause clutter but bring spaces together. Adding whimsical and personalized touches.
Every thrifted piece adds a bit of character and tells its own story. I love the idea (and plan) that nothing in our home will look straight out of a catalog or off a shelf. It will all be a mix of memories, creativity, and a little DIY magic.
Peeling back the "trailor" look takes time and money but I'm hoping with some planning and patience I will be able to pull it off using tip money and my limited days off. Each little project might not seem like much, but all together, they will completely change the feeling of our space.
It’s wont be perfect, but that’s kind of the point. It will be ours. Built with patience, creativity, and a lot of heart.
